Jury Duty

I know we're counting days-- daze away from, probably, the most important election in a generation-- maybe a few generations-- you could argue.

I see some of the wire services have put up headlines that say McCain and Obama are running neck and neck in two battleground states, Missouri and North Carolina. The fact that Missouri and North Carolina are considered battleground states at all, tells the story of how this thing is breaking. Intrade has Obama trading in the mid 80's. That's probably right.

Everything looks good, about as good as it could be under the circumstances, but there is palpable dread, or anxiety in the air. There is plenty of anxiety in the air on many levels, but on the political Left, the anxiety is about the Right's, professional grade, voter suppression machine being effective and-- I hate to even say this, it's like saying the word "seven" while you're rolling dice, it's just a word you do not say, no one with any sense says "seven" while they're rolling dice, anyway-- but I have to say it-- assassination, is a threat looming out there that everyone on the Left is more than anxious about. No one, least of them, me, wants to think about that.

I was called for jury duty last week. I will be writing about it. Very interesting stuff. My nemesis, the deposed and discredited former judge, Charles Pickering, was one of the, get this, 17 attorneys litigating the case. Money and rednecks and oil and more money. A great story that will be up soon, events permitting; but while I was sitting with the other prospective jurors yesterday, a couple of natives behind me started talking, in a round about way, politics. They starting talking, hopefully, I thought, about the assassination possibility.

The Left is not being paranoid in this fear.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in him, and I am helped.
My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.

The Lord is the strength of his people,
A fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Save your people and bless your inheritance;
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
